CONSERVATION

Kalepo is a project which will ultimately consist of two exclusive-use luxury safari camps in an area where wildlife and the community are in need of sustainable conservation. The locations have been hand-picked in the northern part of the Namunyak Conservancy in Northern Kenya. This is a truly wild corner of Africa; completely unfenced and untamed, where wildlife and pastoralist tribes co-exist as they have done for centuries. We are funded by a group of like-minded individuals who are conservation driven and would like to facilitate the preservation of an ecosystem and the expansion of wildlife habitat consisting of several threatened wildlife species. Under the governance of the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) we will provide long-term income to the local community thereby improving their livelihoods and infrastructure.

The last 30 years have seen significant declines in wildlife across Kenya and Africa due to habitat loss and the unregulated harvesting of natural resources. Ivory poaching continues to threaten the future of elephants Africa-wide, and the illegal trade in rhino horn pushes the rhino ever closer to extinction.

On the grasslands, grazing competition with livestock is one of the biggest challenges facing both wildlife and pastoralist communities, for whom cattle is a sole source of income. Community conservancies are slowly but surely changing attitudes toward wildlife. Well-established conservancies lead by example (e.g.. Namunyak Conservancy and Mara North Conservancy), proving that wildlife conservation can bring substantial and sustainable income. Increasingly, communities have a sense of pride in their wildlife, as the ripple effects of conservation extend to peace, education, health and family income.

Our vision is to generate economic and social benefits in ways that actively support meaningful conservation outcomes. We are working with the below organisation to try and make a difference in protecting some of the species in our area. The main organisation we work with and are associated to is Habitatio Inc. Their support has been instrumental in allowing us to achieve and reach our conservation goals.
